EROAD and NZI Expand Decade-Long Partnership to Reward New Zealand's Safest Light Commercial Fleets
In a New Zealand first, light commercial vehicle operators can now earn an insurance excess waiver simply by driving safely.
EROAD, a global leader in fleet management, safety and compliance technology, and NZI, New Zealand's leading business insurer, today announced the expansion of their Safe Driving Rewards programme to light commercial vehicle customers. This is a landmark moment in a partnership that has spanned a decade and delivered proven safety and financial results for heavy fleet operators across New Zealand. For a sector that accounts for more than 80% of the country's commercial vehicle population, rewarding safe driving to help mitigate risk represents a significant step forward.
Opening Programme Doors to Light Commercial Fleets
Since its launch ten years ago, the NZI Safe Driving Rewards programme has delivered meaningful safety and financial benefits to New Zealand's heavy commercial fleet operators. Today, the programme opens its doors to light commercial vehicle fleets for the first time.
Light commercial vehicle fleets insured with NZI and leveraging EROAD telematics can now enrol in the programme. It’s simple: fleets that rank in the top 25% of New Zealand's safest operators, based on verified EROAD telematics data, receive an excess waiver on their insurance excess when making a driving loss claim. There is no joining fee, and eligible customers can activate immediately with no need to wait until policy renewal.
“NZI Safe Driving Rewards has proven its value with heavy fleets over the past decade and extending it to light commercial fleets means more businesses can benefit from safer driving. It’s a clear example of the NZI Advantage in action - working with EROAD to reward good driver behaviour and improve road safety outcomes across New Zealand’s commercial vehicle sector.”
— Garry Taylor, Executive General Manager, NZI
“EROAD and NZI are well aligned - both organisations are striving to improve safety outcomes on New Zealand's roads. We've seen the real impact the programme has had on fleets in terms of reduced risk and improved driver behaviours, and we're pleased to be bringing it to light fleet customers. Rewarding safe driving behaviour is a powerful motivator and the tools we've built give fleet managers everything they need to act on it.”
— Matt Gibson, Executive General Manager New Zealand, EROAD
Safety Performance at the Heart of the Programme
The EROAD Leaderboard sits at the heart of the NZI Safe Driving Rewards programme — giving fleets a clear benchmark of their safety performance against industry peers and a national dataset. To ensure more light commercial fleets can access the programme, EROAD has launched a new Advanced Safety module for its EROAD Locate solution, bringing the Leaderboard and a suite of safety tools to customers looking for a simple, affordable entry point into telematics.
EROAD Locate provides exactly that - combining a simple plug-and-play device with EROAD's market-leading MyEROAD platform. In addition to the Vehicle Leaderboard, the Advanced Safety module gives customers access to speed reporting, harsh driving reporting and seatbelt compliance reporting, delivering a powerful set of tools to encourage safer driving across the fleet.
How it Works
Accessing the NZI Safe Driving Rewards programme is straightforward.
Eligible hardware: Customers with an EROAD Locate Advanced Safety plan or an Ehubo2 Safe Driver plan are eligible to participate.
No joining fee: There is no cost to join the programme.
No waiting period: Eligible customers can activate immediately and don’t need to wait for policy renewal.
Objective ranking: Safe driving scores are calculated using verified telematics data from EROAD's platform, benchmarked against a national dataset of light vehicles.
Top 25% threshold: If a driving loss occurs and a fleet is in the top 25% of EROAD subscribers for safe driving (based on average safety score for the 28 days before the accident), NZI will waive the excess on the claim.*
The programme creates a powerful feedback loop: telematics data drives safer behaviour, safer behaviour improves rankings, and improved rankings unlock financial rewards that reinforce the value of the safety investment.
*The NZI Safe Driving Rewards excess waiver applies to eligible NZI-insured fleets that achieve a top 25% safe driving ranking based on verified EROAD telematics data. Terms and conditions apply. Visit safedrivingrewards.co.nz for full programme details.
