The biggest road safety issue in New Zealand today is speed – drivers travelling too fast for conditions. Speeding is a factor in a third of all fatal crashes, killing an average of 12 people every week. Drivers who observe the speed limit will naturally have fewer accidents, as the introduction of speed cameras has shown. In the 20 months following their adoption in 1993, fatal and serious crashes at urban camera sites dropped by 23 percent and 11 percent at rural sites.
